Utilizing an estimated 10% of the original chassis, the new and improved electric coupe was predominantly constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber, substituting the initial fuel engine with a 50.4 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack to grant unparalleled power, longer duration and a green vision.

Weighing an estimated 350kg, the Totem Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Electric Coupe boasts 518bhp, with additional power-management efficiency settings and the capability to accelerate 0 to 100km/h in a matter of 3.4 seconds.

Designed and tested to offer top performance both on track and road, the coupe’s newest disk brake caliper B-M4, disks 328×28 and 345×28, come directly from Brembo and can be customized in a variety of colours and markings upon request.

Featuring internal heating on the front and rear windows, the Totem Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Electric Coupe includes modern air conditioning systems, an extended audio system by AUDIO DEVELOPMENT, and a fully digitalized dual-screen control board with a sophisticated antitheft system, Bluetooth connection, interactive maps, and DAB radio, alongside vehicle controls and stats.

While Totem Automobili has yet to define its exact production schedule and price, the company has published a detailed summary of the Totem Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Electric Coupe’s design specifications and is currently accepting enquiries on its official website.

ICOMIA’s State of the Industry Report on Covid-19: Asia Focus

The Japan International Boat Show scheduled for March was cancelled, along with five other local boat shows planned to take place in April and May. Imported boat dealers will hold the new boat sea trials for potential customers individually from April, according to the ICOMIA report.

Marinas are open without any restrictions; Manufacturers are experiencing supply delays. For manufacturers, some parts from China have been delayed and companies are looking for alternative suppliers. There is concern about the reduction of volume due to the global demand downturn.

Hong Kong

Due to the increasing number of cases, the Government has introduced stronger measures, limiting alcohol licenses at bars and restaurants, and ordering the closure of sports clubs with private recreational leases (PRL). Several yacht clubs have closed due to the new government policies on PRL but access to boats is still open. Several yacht clubs are closed, but access to boats is still open.

According to a recent survey conducted by Hong Kong Boating Industry Association, a total of 71 per cent of employees will be affected if the downturn persists. Cancellation of both international and local boating and sailing events has had a significant-to-moderate negative impact for 75 per cent of companies in the industry.

Singapore

Bars and entertainment venues are closed from March 26-April 30. Restaurants are not affected. Schools remain open but enrichment programmes and tuition centres are closed. All arrivals have to submit a health declaration form online prior to travel. Short-term visitors (including transiting passengers) are not allowed since March 24. The cruise centre is closed.

Marinas are still open for business. Cruising in local waters is possible, but foreign arrivals will be turned away. The Singapore Yacht Show, which was scheduled for March, has been moved to October 22-25, 2020.

UAE

Since March 26, the Emirati government has issued a mandatory lockdown, while it conducts a general sterilisation campaign with the aim of controlling the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country. A curfew begins as of 20:00 (local time) up to 6.00am. Public transportation is suspended during this period. Employees of certain sectors are exempt, including police, the army, medical staff, airports, and banks, among few others. Those who do not respect the curfew period will face fines. Commercial centres, malls, and open markets are closed now for two weeks, renewable. Restaurants are ordered to exclusively offer take-out services. In addition, all international flights are suspended for different period of times and depending on destinations.

Following Government and Ministerial guidelines and measures to ensure health and safety of its residents and visitors, maritime authorities notified all maritime activities companies, yacht charter and jetski rental companies to suspend the all maritime activities until further notice. In general, boating activity in UAE and Oman is suspended, but the marinas remain open for private boat owners, provided they stay on board and don’t go out. Some luxury resort marinas with hotels are offering services and responding to owners’ requests while onboard (deliveries, etc).

In Abu Dhabi, although private boating has not been forbidden by government decree, marinas are very quiet as most members respect the government’s instructions to stay at home. All commercial activities have been halted within the marinas as per the authority’s instructions. All commercial charter, pleasure and touring activity is banned. Fishing marinas are still active, since considered a vital activity.

In general, marina offices are open according to regularly hour, but manned only by administration staff, reduced to a minimum to guarantee safety and security. Marina operational staff remain 24/7, although shifts are reduced to minimum safe manning.

Each marina adds additional precautionary measures to reduce spread of the Covid-19 virus, such as:

  • introduction of increased cleaning protocols, especially for typical contact areas such as door handles, washroom, buggies, trolleys, office area and equipment, etc
  • screening all employee temperatures at point of entry
  • enhancement of internal health & safety training measures
  • preventive measures protocol distribution to suppliers and contractors
  • monitoring the situation on a daily basis and adapt accordingly

“Since our soft opening in May 2018, we have gradually gained a reputation for serenity, services, year-round shelter, convenience for yacht checking in and out, and being close to Ao Nang, Krabi Town and Krabi International Airport,” said Matthew Na Nagara, Port Takola’s General Manager and Chairman of the Thai Yachting Business Association.

“Boat repair services and superyacht arrivals are other factors behind this expansion. Our boatyard now provides a comprehensive service, so more repair work can be done here. A chandlery is now available onsite, so this makes it more convenient to base a yacht here on long-term basis.

“We’re also receiving more interest from superyachts for short- term and seasonal visits. This is due to more awareness of our capability and the value we can provide in comparison to other nearby destinations.”

Pier G will feature a 3m-wide concrete pontoon and Thermowood grooved-surface fingers built by Marinetek. All pedestals will feature two power connections to accommodate air-conditioning, while superyacht pedestals will provide 125-amp three-phase electrical supply.

Port Takola is also offering 30 per cent discounts to yachts berthing for more than a week, as well as long-term berth ownership.

Twin 83, Thailand’s Biggest Sailing Catamaran, Building in Bangkok

Construction has begun in Thailand on Twin 83, which is set to become the country’s biggest sailing catamaran. Twin 83 is poised to take over the mantle from the 78ft double-deck Lobster based in Phuket, which participated in the fourth Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous last December.

Twin 83, an 83ft double-deck ‘party cat’, has an Australian-designed hull and is being built and fitted out in Bangkok. Jay Ujjin is managing the custom build and said the catamaran’s Phuket-based owner, a renowned hospitality brand, was inspired by the likes of Lobster and Hype, both designed by Ocean Voyager from France and built in Sri Lanka.

“Those yachts are my client’s inspiration,” said Ujjin, who said the mould for Twin 83 has been completed. “I’m working closely with the owner to develop an efficient layout and impressive aesthetics to create a unique customer experience. Although the hull is an Australian design, the rest of the design is tailor-made by our Thai designer.”

Ujjin was formerly based in Phuket, where he was active in the sailing and regatta scene, and helped establish the Phuket Yacht Club. Upon returning to his native Bangkok, he created a diesel marine business providing services to the broader marine industry, mainly involving the maintenance of superyachts from the Mediterranean.

“Thailand’s yacht-building industry has evolved over recent years and can compete on a global scale in terms of price and quality,” said Ujjin, whose team members include certified MTU engineers with over 25 years of experience in The Royal Thai Navy Shipyard.

“The party catamaran is becoming increasingly popular in established resort destinations in Europe and Southeast Asia. It provides an affordable and accessible alternative to the traditional charter business. I’m confident Twin 83 will make a splash on the Phuket party scene.”

Galeon Yachts Goes Global as Polish Builder Enjoys ‘Golden’ Era

It has been five years since the launch of Galeon’s 500 Fly and its iconic ‘beach mode’ innovation and four years since Galeon partnered with MarineMax as its distributor in the US. How’s business now?

We are in absolutely perfect condition. We have had a golden four years and we’re growing every year. We had a beautiful 2019, increasing annual production by 30 per cent, and we’ve more than doubled our production since 2016. We’ve been selling well, we’re keeping up with production and we have the money for future investments. Economically, we’re in the perfect situation.

Tell us about your newest models, such as the 400 Fly, which had its world premiere at Boot Dusseldorf this year.

The 400 Fly is the smallest unit we have that offers the Galeon beach mode, which means it has the same drop-down sides that were first seen on the 500 then the 460. It also has other new innovations, such as a master cabin placed midships and a wet bar and grill on the swim platform.

The 680 Fly was launched at Cannes last year and was our biggest boat at Dusseldorf this year. It follows the 66ft and 64ft, but is a completely new yacht, with a new mould – it’s not just an upgrade.

The 680 Fly appears more conventional than the 640, which won many awards since its premiere at Cannes in 2018.

The 640 Fly is full of innovations, such as the beach mode and the front door to go to the foredeck. The 640 is good for charter and a pretty fancy boat, but not every client wants this so we developed the 680, which is slightly bigger but more classic. It’s dedicated to clients looking for a more solid, classic motor yacht.

Galeon sales in the US have soared since the partnership with MarineMax in 2016. Where do you rank in your sector?

Let’s just say we are now well established in the top three in the 40-70ft motor yacht category after just four years in the US market, where we started as a completely unknown brand. The US has overtaken Europe as our biggest market and now accounts for 50 per cent of our sales.

I think we started with 15 locations in the US where you could buy Galeon yachts. Today, we have 63, plus Canada, Mexico and other countries in the Americas under MarineMax.

By 2018, we were already in the top-five and top of the European brands in the 40-70ft sector. By early 2019, we were still the top European brand, with just [American builders] Cruisers and Tiara ahead of us. Towards the end of the year, we were even higher. Although we wanted to be successful, we didn’t expect to be in this position today. Of course, we’ve put in tonnes of effort and so has MarineMax.

Were you surprised to outperform many of the long-established European builders, often regarded as the world’s leading luxury yacht brands?

Yes, this was a surprise to us, especially in such a short time. Of course, we’ve had a lot of success because of MarineMax but it’s also because of our product. For five years, we’ve been probably the most innovative yacht builder in the world and we’re very happy with the position we’re in today.

Last November, we were also very proud when Galeon was recognised for its ‘regional growth plans’ at the Boat Builder Awards in Amsterdam. It’s one of the IBI’s most important awards and it was for the company and its growth, not our yachts.

A leading executive at one of the world’s leading motor yacht builders told me, “Galeon makes us all look like dinosaurs”. Can the company maintain its reputation for innovation?

Definitely. At Galeon, we believe that to be successful, we cannot stop, that’s for sure. We need to find new solutions, new innovations and we’re constantly working on new projects. This year, we’ll be launching a new 700 Skydeck, which will be based on the same hull as the 680 Fly, but with a completely different superstructure and more sporty design.

We’re working on a new 800 that will be our biggest boat and take the place of the 780 Crystal, which is not so appealing anymore because of all the innovations on our newer models. For example, the flybridge on the new 680 is bigger than that on the 780!

We’re also working on projects for 2021. Overall, we’re working on nearly nine projects right now. We’re changing the 420 Fly into a 440, the 550 Fly needs to develop as well, and there are also drawings of an 86ft project, although that may only be ready in two years’ time.

Are you still working with British designer Tony Castro on these new projects?

Yes, we’re continuing to work with Tony Castro, although I need to say that many of the new ideas and designs come from the owner of Galeon Yachts (Jacek Kobylko), who’s the son of the company founder (Wieczyslaw Kobylko).

Our owner’s biggest strength is probably his love of yachts, the product, especially the design. He spends a lot of his time on drawings, details and new ideas, not on the production line or dealer network – that’s my job. He puts his ideas on paper and suggests some to Tony Castro, asking him to design them professionally.

Some of these first ideas are pretty crazy and sometimes Tony Castro says, ‘I’m not sure that we can do it, to be honest’. The owner says, ‘Let’s look at it, try it, because we make it all in-house anyway, so even if the idea doesn’t work, we can say we tried’. That’s his philosophy.

How much of Galeon’s yachts are built in-house in your two sites in Gdansk?

We build 99 per cent of our boats in-house – we only buy engines and a few other ready-made parts, like every yacht manufacturer has to. But we barely have any sub-contractors – I have one company that does external covers for the boats, that’s all. Everything is done in-house – hulls, wood work, stainless steel, aluminium, all the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, and so on.

So, the most rewarding feedback I still get from clients who use our boats a lot and travel for long distances, is that we build really strong, solid boats. Some boatbuilders forget that yachts need to survive at sea, not only have a nice design and look great.
We focus on building seaworthy boats with a strong hull because we know our boats need to go through different conditions. We live next to the Baltic Sea in northern Europe, so we have very good experience of tough conditions.

Do you have any plans to develop your facilities?

We have an investment plan for the next five years that includes new machinery, although this also depends on the economy and market stability.

This year, we’re going to start the construction of a new winter storage, which will be the biggest in our part of the Baltic Sea. We’re also considering to extend it and combine the winter-season storage with a year-round showroom of our boats. It’s a new idea and may bring us a lot of benefits. We always have boats coming off the production line awaiting transportation, so they can be put into the showroom for potential clients. We can even use some of our clients’ boats during certain times, so we can have models year-round.

We’ve been waiting a long time for construction permission and documentation, and now that we can start, we hope to finish the winter storage by the end of 2020 or early 2021.

How is Galeon’s business in Asia, where you’re represented by Asiamarine, as well as Asia Marine in Thailand?

Our business with Asiamarine is growing, for sure, and it has recently doubled. We’ve been working together to develop the market and our brand in Asia. There have been a lot of efforts by Asiamarine and we can see what they’ve done.

Now, I have feedback that our brand is increasingly recognised and visible, plus there’s more interest from existing and potential owners. We can see this by the orders. We had good sales in 2019, pretty
good orders for 2020 and already for 2021. We’ve been surprised by Vietnam as a new market.

I need to get out to Asia more myself, but I’ve got a couple of other places to go first, such as to support some new dealers in the Middle East and North Africa.

How are your sales in Europe?

In our size category for inboard motor yachts, we were recently No. 2 in France, No. 1 in Germany, No. 1 in Russia and we’re growing in the UK, which is a very difficult market for us because they have their own brands. Clients are usually very proud to own boats built in their own country, but we can see good results there. I’m happy about this. We’re also growing in the Balearics, like Majorca.

So, where’s the big potential?

Scandinavia. It’s a good market, but somehow, we lost our share. We were quite strong before the crisis in 2008 and 2009, but we’ve had difficulty coming back. It’s one of the regions I have to focus on in the next year or two.

What about Australia and New Zealand?

We started in 2018 in Gold Coast and now we have four locations: three in Australia – Gold Coast, Sydney and Perth – and one in New Zealand, so I’m happy.

Considering your growth in recent years, what do you need to match the best-known luxury yacht brands, who have been long established across the world?

Now, we need time. Time to prove that we can be stable after such strong gains in the last few years and that we can keep up with demand. We need to ensure we maintain our reputation for production quality and after-sales service for our clients. We need to keep a good relationship with all our dealers.

If we can prove over the next couple of years that we can maintain this position, then it will be visible to clients and our competitors that we belong in the top league along with the best-known brands in the market, who are so well established and have a much longer history than Galeon.

At the same time, we need to work on new projects because new designs and innovation are among our strengths.

I’m not sure we need to keep trying to be bigger, bigger and bigger. For a short period, maybe it’s better to be more stable and establish some frameworks. We grew a lot in the last four years and now we need to show people that we’re here to stay.

Worth an estimated $7,100+/-, guests are given free rein to personalize their package as they see fit through a menu of a la carte, in-room treatments, which include,  a $500 coronavirus test, two-daily nurse check-ins worth $1,800, 24/7 nurse care for an estimated $4,800, plus food deliveries and personal chef services.

With the elimination of daily cleanings, guests are in-charge of keeping their space neat during their stay, while the hotel works to thoroughly sanitize all rooms before and after guest checkout.

Swan 58 Designed by German Frers Bought by Japan-Based Owner

A Japan-based owner has bought hull number two of the upcoming Swan 58, with the first hull expected to launch in Finland by the end of June. The model’s world premiere is scheduled for the 52nd Boot Dusseldorf in January 2021.

Nautor’s Swan, which announced a 50 per cent growth in turnover for 2019, revealed details of the yacht in January. Six units had been sold by late February.

The Swan 58 is the first of that name ever produced by the historic Finnish yard, founded in 1966. In contrast, the 48 launched last year was the third model of the same name and the second designed by the legendary German Frers, who designed the 58 and all other models in the current Swan Yachts and Maxi Swan ranges.

include the similarly-sized 56 and 57 (second version), created the 58 as a fast bluewater cruiser that can be comfortably sailed by a couple, with a performance package as an option.

Below deck the interior has a forward owner stateroom with en-suite bathroom and two aft cabins with en-suites. Options include a fourth cabin midships for guests or crew and a crew cabin in the forepeak.

A new cockpit design includes twin tables that can connect to form a 10-seat dining table or separately be converted into sunbeds. The Swan 58 joins the 48, 54, 65 and 78 in the Swan Yachts range, while the builder’s other lines comprise Maxi Swan Yachts (98, 120) and ClubSwan Yachts (36, 50, 125).

Swan staged the world premiere of the ClubSwan 36 at Dusseldorf in January, while last year’s premieres included the Swan 65 at Dusseldorf and the Swan 48 at Cannes.

Fraser Hong Kong Sells 44m Royal Denship Odyssey

Fraser Hong Kong has sold the 44m Odyssey, a 2007 build by Danish shipyard Royal Denship. The transaction was an in-house sale by Adam Blackmore, who represented both seller and buyer.

Blackmore is a Sales Broker for Fraser and also Commercial Director of Asiamarine, which is headquartered in Hong Kong and operates offices across the region.

Fraser partnered Asiamarine in early 2018 to open new offices in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, the latter managed by Phuket-based Asia Marine.

The 499GT Odyssey, which completed its 10-year Lloyd’s survey, has an attractive sundeck with a jacuzzi, barbecue and wet bar, while her interior features five spacious cabins and a gym that can be converted into a sixth.

“We were able to find a buyer in just six months of listing Odyssey for sale,” said Blackmore, who has been based in Asia since 2013. “The yacht is a classical beauty, built to an excellent standard and almost silent at anchor.”

Odyssey marked the second sale of a 30m-plus superyacht by Fraser Hong Kong within three months. Late last year, Blackmore and Eric Noyel, founder and CEO of Asiamarine, represented both the buyer and seller in the sale of the 30.75m G, an Azimut Leonardo 100 built in 2012.

“I was involved in the sale of G to her previous owners and was delighted to represent both buyer and seller again,” Blackmore said.

Asiamarine is also a dealer for Poland’s Galeon, Turkey’s Numarine and American brands Hatteras and Wellcraft. In January, Numarine announced the sale of five superyachts from its XP series – hull four of the 32XP and hulls seven, eight, nine and 10 of the newer 26XP model.

“These sales indicate the relevance and popularity of the XP series,” said Omer Malaz, founder and Chairman of Numarine. “We are very pleased five more international customers will be able to experience the high quality and impeccable style of Numarine.”

As well as new yacht sales and representing Fraser, Asiamarine has brokerage, charter and management divisions.

Surpassing Vignale as the most popular carrozzeria amongst Ferrari enthusiasts, Italian car design firm, Pininfarina quickly became the Maranello-based manufacturer’s go-to craftsmen following the creation of the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Prototipo.

Soliciting the firm’s expertise for at least 48 out of the 53 most valuable Europa/Europa GTs slated over the years, the Berlinetta was first unveiled at the Geneva Salon in March 1956, showcasing sleek, sensual body lines, an elongated wheelbase, Columbo V12 engine and immaculate handcrafted bodywork.

Thrust into the limelight, the up-and-coming Pininfarina struggled to manage the overwhelming success and demand of its design, whilst utilizing minimal resources without a well-equipped factory to work from. Completing a handful of prototypes, the firm eventually entrusted Carrozzeria Boano with the remainder of its production.

Modifying the original Pininfarina chassis, engine and gearbox, to create an iconic range of Boano cars, including the 250 GT Boano coupe series – only a few unique and influential grand touring Pininfarina prototypes have survived.

Rarely for public sale, this 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Prototipo was made-to-order for Enzo Ferrari’s personal friend, and revered orchestra conductor, Guido Cantelli of Novara, Italy, in April 1956. Upon his inevitable death, Ferrari repurchased and resold the Berlinetta, passing it through several hands, including Sergio Canara of Parma, Swiss national Mr Messerli, and Mr Obserson in 1980 – who displayed the repainted car at the 1990 Club Ferrari Suisse’s anniversary meeting in Montreux, Switzerland.

Maintaining its original chassis number 0435GT, the car was eventually sent to garage Cointreau in France for a complete body restoration, refinished in its authentic silver tone, before being repurchased and refurbished in 2015 by the current owner.

Featuring its original rear axle, this 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Prototipo is currently for sale and awaits its official Ferrari Classiche Certification.
