Design trends, new technologies and ever-evolving construction capabilities are just the tip of the iceberg when considering a new yacht build, one of the specialty divisions at Camper & Nicholsons. From lightweight build materials to the use of glass in part of the yacht’s structure, and from foredeck pools to balconies that extend outside living space, building a superyacht takes time but most importantly expertise.
Camper & Nicholsons has been associated with the design and build of many of the world’s most iconic, groundbreaking and highly-acclaimed superyachts, so I’d like to share some of the latest trends in new yacht builds with Asia’s superyacht owners and designers.
Future-proof design is one. With rapidly changing fashions and developments in technology, a superyacht design that can stand the test of time is key.
Big, bold and adventure-focused explorer yachts are also increasingly popular. The ability to adventure around the world can be one of the most appealing aspects of superyacht ownership. Attributes of 80m-plus expedition vessels are now being incorporated into yachts of 45-80m, allowing cruisers used to the Mediterranean, Caribbean and our own region to venture off the beaten track.
More glass is also being used, but establishing a visual connection with the sea from on board a yacht is harder than it sounds. These days, thanks to new techniques, it’s possible to incorporate more glass than ever before.
New 40m-plus sailing yachts have recently been few and far between since experiencing a boom in the early 2000s, but are now making a comeback as there’s a greater focus on sustainability. The environmental drive to enjoy our oceans with decreased impact has led sailing yacht builders to present concepts that offer ocean-crossing cruising with motor yacht levels of luxury.
Speed still holds appeal. For many owners, time is money, yet speed, the most luxurious of assets, can be hard to come by. As a result, yachts that can deliver long-range cruising ability in a speedy fashion are highly sought-after.
Statement swimming pools are becoming a key feature. On larger yachts, plunge pools are becoming more common and can be included along with an on-deck jacuzzi. Often with an infinity edge, a statement pool can be a focal point of the yacht’s exterior and the design lends itself to socialising.
Apartment-style living is increasingly becoming the ‘norm’. When you step aboard your superyacht, it should feel like a home away from home. Now, everything from the décor to the layout is given careful consideration, replicating life on shore. Full-height windows in a master suite can be reminiscent of a high-rise loft apartment, although with mesmerising sea views there’s no danger of forgetting where you are.
Aluminium hulls are now more frequently considered because the material offers greater scope of design and weight-saving efficiency, resulting in higher top speeds.
On-deck living is also becoming more important to clients, so more space and time is dedicated to it. When you’re cruising the coastline in a warm breeze, on deck is the only place to be, even for Asia clients who used to prefer to stay indoors. Understandably, a design that maximises on-deck living space comes high on the list of criteria for any prospective superyacht owner.
All of these trends have been evident in recent designs, projects and launches from Camper and Nicholsons’ New Build Division, yet as we always emphasise, each superyacht is tailor made for its owner.
