Tanner Van De Veer Attempts To Revive The Harley-Davidson

Shrouded in dark figures, the iconic American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson have been on a rapid downward spiral since 2007. Selling a mere 218,273 units worldwide in 2019, the company reported a 4.3% drop in sales when compared the 228,051 units sold, the year before.

Tanner Van De Veer Attempts To Revive The Harley-Davidson

On a mission to bring Harley-Davidson to a whole new generation of riders, design studio, Tanner Van De Veer has published a University-grade thesis, identifying Harley-Davidson’s most pressing issues. Mapping-out the necessary changes and steps in full detail, Tanner Van De Veer highlights the company’s failure to attract younger buyers and passivity when scouting dealers.

Going further, the thesis unveils the renderings of a revival motorcycle. Positioned as an entry-level electric bike with a low starting price and light, accessible dimensions, the studio expresses a need for a small-to-mid-weight electric motorcycle targeted at balancing sport and relaxation. Such a bike, thus aims to redirect the Harley-Davidson product, from an exclusive social club to a diversified lifestyle essential.

Crafted based on the signature Harley-Davidson design language in an effort to maintain brand identity, Tanner Van De Veer suggests establishing a hot swap battery subscription platform to reduce capital for each individual purchase, and sustainable elements such as an electric powertrain – which is not only quiet and environmentally friendly, but provides a less intimidating learning experience, thanks to the consequential elimination of the bike’s clutch and excessive gears.

Drawing inspiration from some of Harley-Davidson’s earliest creations including, the boarder-tracker, the all-new revival motorcycle is expected to feature an abundance of transparencies, creating an illusion of mass whilst a combination of lights and brutal shapes modernize its form. Regarded equal part vintage and punk, the revival Harley-Davidson showcases a distinctive open-air tank, a paneled power unit, Carhatt duck canvas seating, and a stripped down UI system, which allows riders to disengage from technology and truly enjoy every moment of the great outdoors.

New York City’s Maker Hotel Ticks All The Boxes on Authenticity and Creativity

As the brainchild of global beauty brand Fresh, Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg, and hospitality expert Damien Janowicz, the Maker Hotel along historic downtown Hudson, New York was inspired by the wide range of creativity present in the Hudson Valley. Established with an aim to bring bespoke experiences to both the close-knit upstate New York community and travelers alike, the Maker Hotel features work from local Hudson valley craftsmen, global artisans, one of kind vintage pieces and an extensive art collection that truly celebrates the world of creators.

New York City’s Maker Hotel Ticks All The Boxes on Authenticity and Creativity

Housing a limited selection of 11 uniquely-themed rooms, the Maker Hotel has brought bohemian sensibility to design. Showcasing a sophisticated curation of different time periods, the hotel presents eclectic design and unparalleled comfort in perfect harmony. Inspired by the world of distinct makers, the hotel’s four expansive maker studios are located within the historic Georgian Mansion building, each accommodating palatial living areas and intricate fireplaces.

Comprised of three separate volumes, this 14,000 sq.ft. hotel includes a Greek revival-style property, a carriage house dating back to the early 1800s, and the Georgian mansion. With the help of new structural additions such as, a central courtyard filled with lush greenery and a “jewel box” conservatory, the Maker Hotel now extends its grounds to accommodate a main restaurant, bar, and culinary program, led by Executive Chef Michael Poiarkoff.

Bonding traditions of mindful cooking with elegant preparation, seasonal composition, and ethical sourcing, the restaurant serves seasonal plates with an emphasis on locality & community. Characterized by playful curiosity & a passion for sustenance, the kitchen cultivates relationships with a diverse array of dedicated Hudson Valley farms and purveyors that guide an evolving menu of Contemporary American fare.

Not far from there, and tucked away inside a restored 19th century carriage house with leather-clad walls & grand ceilings, the dedicated lounge area transports its guests to candle-lit corners by the hand carved fireplace, a seat at the captivating bar, or relishing the evening out on the patio. With a menu of its own, the lounge area offers guests an enticing selection of craft cocktails, wines, and local beers, alongside a tempting array of savoury plates.

Adorned with antiques and other bespoke decorative pieces made from combining salvaged objects, the Maker Hotel was largely designed by Glazman – Roytberg with special attention paid to refining guest experience. Through incorporating as many original features as possible, the team sought to preserve the ornate fireplaces, hand-painted ceilings, stained-glass windows and tiled mosaic flooring that already existed across the three buildings.

The Ferrari Omologata Coupe Will Never Be Replicated or Mass Produced

Unveiling its latest one-off commission, Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari transforms its esteemed 812 Superfast GT into an Omologata coupe. In the works for a period of two years, the Omologata marks Ferrari’s 10th special V12 front-engined customer order, drawing inspiration from the marque’s long GT racing history.

The Ferrari Omologata Coupe Will Never Be Replicated or Mass Produced

Following a lineage of notable customer specials including  the Ayra, the F12 TRS, the SP275 RW, the 458 MM, the SP38 and the P80/C, the all-new Omologata sheds much of its original design, retaining only the iconic 812’s windscreen and headlights. Conceptualized by the in-house Ferrari Centro Stile design team, the Omologata features an entirely bespoke bodywork, sporting a restrained and block-like aesthetic with smaller front grilles and new intakes, cut into shutlines on the bonnet and front wings.

Characterized by a simple two-line design that like the nose, hides its intakes and release vents into the shutlines created between the door, front wing and the new rear quarter windows, the Omologata boasts a motorsport-inspired profile, and exaggerate the pinched hips. In a statement by Ferrari, the automaker admits, “The trickiest aspect was striking the ideal balance between expressiveness and restraint: the Omologata had to ooze street presence whilst maintaining a very pure formal language.”

Beginning their process with the removal of the 812 Superfast GT’s rear screen, this iconic customer special showcases a slatted tailgate which sits atop larger single-roundell tail lights, and blends seamlessly into the car’s hand-formed aluminum haunches. Dominated by large rear diffusers that house four exhaust outlets, the Omologata is regarded extremely difficult to mass produce despite its standard 812 interior.

Not for sale, nor will it ever be – at least by Ferrari, the Omologata is a one-of-a-kind ultra-luxury build intended for the brand’s most loyal and well-heeled clients. Packing a 6.4-liter, 789 horsepower V12, this customer special represents an ideal balance of immense beauty and restrained power.

Lantau Yacht Club, Hong Kong’s custom-built superyacht marina

Lantau Yacht Club is welcoming its first yachts as the newly named marina soft opened following a concentrated period of rebuilding and refurbishment since the start of 2019.

The first member vessel, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 sailing boat, was the first boat to berth in the marina and was followed by a visiting Ferretti Yachts 670 motor yacht, a model that recently made its Asian debut in Hong Kong.

All 148 berths are scheduled to be completed by October and will be followed by the opening of the new-look clubhouse, which is undergoing a major facelift as part of the overhaul of the former Discovery Bay Marina Club, founded in 1989.

With the end of construction in sight and operations beginning, Ivan Lee, the club’s Vice President, appears a relieved man, especially with the second year of work coinciding with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“We have been very blessed with the weather, so everything has gone to plan and is on schedule,” Lee says.

Located in Discovery Bay on the northeast of Lantau Island, the marina is owned by Hong Kong Resort Company (HKR), a principal subsidiary of HKR International Limited (HKRI) and the developer and owner of Discovery Bay, the 650-hectare residential complex accessed by road or a 25-minute ferry ride west of Central.

The first marina in Hong Kong designed to cater to the specific needs of superyachts, the Lantau Yacht Club features 38 berths for yachts from 30m to over 60m and can accommodate megayachts up to about 100m, with the longest berths located by the marina entrance and the seawall.

“Hong Kong is one of the main activity centres of superyachts in the region, but there has been a lack of mooring and facilities tailor-made for superyachts in Hong Kong in the past,” Lee says. “As Lantau Yacht Club will also attract superyachts from other parts of the world, a number of berths will be reserved for visiting yachts.”

The Marina Office at the Lantau Yacht Club has been operational since July

The marina also includes 57 berths for yachts from 15-30m and 53 from 10-15m, all with finger pontoons. Furthermore, there’s hard stand space for 15 boats up to 17m and dry-stack storage with 30 slots up to 12m.

NEW AND IMPROVED
Lee says the marina has been reconfigured within the original breakwater not only to accommodate larger yachts but also for a general upgrade in hardware and software to reflect the changes in yachting and technology in recent decades.

HKR managed the project with support from specialists and consultants. Marina Projects advised on the masterplan design, berth mix and technical provisions, while Atkins was responsible for the structural design of the concrete pontoon system.

“The marina has been custom designed and rebuilt to cater to today’s standard and requirements, especially for the increasingly popular superyacht sector. After 29 years of non-stop operation, the marina and clubhouse needed to be renovated and upgraded to provide safe, high-quality berthing and services for members,” Lee says.

“For example, the old marina layout was based on yacht sizes that were common over three decades ago, while electricity and fire-safety requirements have changed over the years. First and foremost, Lantau Yacht Club is a typhoon-proof marina, offering the best-possible safety and protection for all berthed vessels.”

The main piers are 5m wide so buggies can safely cross each-other alongside pedestrians, although the installation of 5m-wide concrete pontoons up to 20m in length proved one of the challenges during construction, which followed a comprehensive technical feasibility and engineering assessment.

“The main pontoons are in concrete to give the same feeling as walking on land,” says Rudy Puystjens, Marina Director.

It may seem a small point, but ashtrays are installed in the marina and people won’t be allowed to flick cigarette butts into the water due to the club’s strong focus on sustainability and environmental friendliness. Fines for polluting and littering will be used for eco projects.

Other measures include mandatory use of biodegradable detergents, recycling and treatment of water used in the service yard, and progressive banning of single-use plastic, while coral planting is among co-initiatives being considered.

It’s not only the berth lengths and environmental focus that have increased. As an example of how services and software have been upgraded, the total electricity capacity is four times bigger than before. Superyachts are serviced by an individual pedestal providing up to 600 amp of three-phase shore-power electricity.

There’s up to 4G of broadband on pontoons, while the club plans to introduce a 5G mobile network.

“The marina’s electricity provision is best of its class and the club is equipped with the highest level of IT provisions,” Puystjens says. “We’re also equipped with a world-class marina management software for a seamless customer experience.”

GROWING CONNECTIONS
Lantau Yacht Club is a proprietary club and membership is offered by invitation only. “We welcome all interested parties who meet our selection criteria. One of the key criteria for membership selection is the appropriateness of the vessels owned by the interested parties,” says Charlotte Ho, Director of Hospitality Marketing and Membership.

“All potential members and their yachts will be considered with respect to, for instance, the club’s rules and regulations, and other regulations and requirements of the authorities.”

As well as transfers to and from Discovery Bay Marina and a concierge service, Lantau Yacht Club members can enjoy a series of special offers and exclusive access to facilities in Discovery Bay, all owned and operated by HKR.

These include the 27-hole Discovery Bay Golf Club, sports and leisure facilities at Discovery Bay Recreation Club, the infinity pool at Club Siena and the Spa, and delicacies at the Auberge Discovery Bay seaside resort hotel.

Apart from golf and swimming, Discovery Bay’s recreational offerings include fitness centres, tennis, squash, basketball, climbing, table tennis, snooker, 10-pin bowling, children’s play areas, dance, indoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms, mah-jong/card room and reading rooms. There’s even a horse-drawn carriage ride, while a new indoor ice rink will open soon.

“The new marina further enhances the image of Discovery Bay as an upscale resort-style community,” Lee says. “It will also benefit local businesses by attracting more visitors and crew.”

Hong Kong Disneyland is among nearby attractions, while south Lantau is lined with nice beaches. The north of the island is home to Hong Kong International Airport and the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, a symbol of the city’s increased connectivity to mainland China.

Lee expects Lantau Yacht Club to lure visiting superyachts to Hong Kong, which he believes will become more popular as cruising regulations ease in mainland China.

“Lantau is a gateway to mainland China and one of the best transit locations for yachts cruising in Asia or en route to China for sightseeing or supplies. Yachting in Asia is benefiting from the growth of wealth in the region, particularly in mainland China, and Hong Kong’s proximity will help it attract more yachts,” Lee says.

“With our new marina and the professional boat repair and maintenance services, Hong Kong can further develop its maritime economy, which in turn will boost tourism and the local economy while maintaining the city’s place as a key yachting hub in Asia.”

Philipp Plein Makes a Mess of All-New $200M Bel Air Residence

Ironically, not a fashion designer nor a celebrity, Philipp Plein has played a hand in almost every aspect of the industry. Fueling the pistons of his lucrative, incendiary and self-named label, worth €200m in 2015, the man is best known for selling gauchely conceived clothing and accessories to the nouveau riche. With 80 stores around the world, including 13 which are privately held and 67 franchises, Philipp Plein’s reputation for flaunting his wealth in the form of a black Rolls-Royce Wraith, Lamborghini Aventador and homes from Cannes to Lugano to Lexington Avenue, has indeed preceded him.

Philipp Plein Makes a Mess of All-New $200M Bel Air Residence

Shrouded in controversy, with sceptics questioning how his businesses were ever financed, and full-on critics displeased by his inauthenticity – who can forget the infamous Philipp Plein brand motif which appeared almost identical to the distinct Stüssy and Dior Fall/Winter 2020 collab, or his distasteful tribute to Kobe Bryant at Milan Fashion Week, which the German entrepreneur was accused of purportedly commercializing an athlete’s death to sell a new collection.

Making headlines for the umpteenth time, for reasons outside the fashion industry, one could almost hear enthusiasts and professionals everywhere heave a unanimous sigh of relief. Perhaps in another show of wealth, Philipp Plein is broadcasting the renovation of his $200M Bel Air house. Utilizing Instagram to unveil the architectural showstopper, captioned “MULTIBILLIONAIRE Howard Hughes! LEGENDARY ENTREPRENEUR, FILMMAKER, AVIATOR AND PLAYBOY”, is anybody really surprised that Philipp Plein’s all-new mansion has an account of its own?

Otherwise known as Chateau Falconview, Philipp Plein’s palatial residence encompasses over 3.6 acres of Bel Air land, making it one of the biggest properties available in the area, (sorry Bruce Makowsky). Featuring a separate guest house, a long winding driveway, and a multitude of unique design elements, Philipp Plein is definitely taking his ‘More is More’ philosophy to another level.

With 200 costume vases, hand-painted wallpaper printed with lyrics from Mozart’s opera ‘The Magic Flute’, leopard print ceilings, “fairytale jungle” wallpaper, a 24k gold gaming arcade, marble gladiator statues, a Beauty and the Beast inspired staircase, crest embossed door handles, a diamond-shaped bathtub that looks like the Tesla-Cybertruck-type-spa, and an unimaginable ton of Swarovski chandeliers – it is nearly impossible to decipher if Philipp Plein is pranking us all for a moment of renewed relevancy, or if he truly is this off-the-wall.

PHILIPP PLEIN Spring Summer 2016

PHILIPP PLEIN Spring Summer 2016

For all the bad press he garners, Philipp Plein actually embodies punk aesthetic and ideals almost perfectly. If we ignore the part where he engages and benefits from capitalism, Philipp Plein’s anti-conformist attitude is significantly admirable. So whether you love him or hate him, the man has forged his own lane from unapologetically colouring outside the lines, and as weird as his house is, perhaps there are a few business-savvy traits we can all learn from him….Or we can just reside to the fact being rich is not a prerequisite for successful interior design.

Foster+Partners Construct Their First Residential Skyscraper With Spectacular Views From Every Apartment

Through utilizing a comprehensively planned mixed-use scheme on the border of Shoreditch and the City of London, architecture studio Foster+Partners, have successfully created a thriving new neighborhood. Pulling out all the stops for its first residential skyscraper, the estate which comprises of 299 luxury apartments, a 15-storey office building expected to host the Amazon London headquarters, and a 50-storey Principal Tower, is surrounded by a shroud of local eateries and bars.

Foster+Partners Construct Their First Residential Skyscraper With Spectacular Views From Every Apartment

Taking the form of three separate volumes, Foster+Partners derive meaning for each component through strategic positioning. Where the tower addresses the residential neighborhood of Shoreditch, it appears lower from ground level, whereas from the west it reflects the high-rise nature of the City, as a central volume rises up between the two to provide an elegant marker on the skyline.

Topped by spectacular penthouses, Foster+Partners’ residential building boasts a multitude of various apartment sizes, ranging anywhere from one-to-two-bedroom complexes. With eight apartments situated on each floor, the building’s square floorplate has been extended in the centre of two sides to create a cruciform plan and most importantly eight corners, each of which curving to form a private balcony. By maximising the perimeter and centralizing the entrance, Foster+Partners have eliminated the need for unnecessary corridors without compromising safety and privacy.

With bedrooms enclosed by solid cladding panels, each apartment is fully glazed and protected by shading fins, the architects aimed to create a calm, understated and contemporary aesthetic that exemplifies the essence of the area and would appeal to a broad range of people. Their focus therefore, revolved around extraordinary views and settings, in order to facilitate seamless transitions.

Measuring 85,000 square-metres of flexible premium office space, its neighbouring building, accommodates a lot more than wealthy business men. Extending into a full-on plaza, the building showcases an interface which not only remains highly adaptive to the surrounding urban environment, but establishes opportunity for connection within the community.

Designed to mirror warehouses of the 21st century, the innovative office floors span over 100 meters, offering a more interactive and flexible organisational model. Featuring an exciting mix of spaces that operate at different scales, each floor showcases a mix of large open-concept areas to small pockets of space that enhance collaboration and creativity.

A2architects Construct A Summer Home Along The Hillsides of Sifnos, Greece

Comprised of two main elements, architects of summer houses are often careful to blend the dedicated building space seamlessly into the natural environment. Considering the relation between interior and exterior, a2architects are renowned for their heavy experimentation with new material, and incorporation of both modern and traditional detailing. Characterized by its simplicity, this vacation home exudes anticipation, trust, and immense comfort.

A2architects Construct A Summer Home Along The Hillsides of Sifnos, Greece

Inspired by the complexity and the volumes of the Cycladic architecture, the 250 sqm summer house lays along the hillsides of Sifnos, a Cyclades island group in Greece. Overlooking the harming valleys of Agios loannis and the Aegean Sea, a2architects strategically selected this North-East orientation for its astonishing views and unique landscape.

Conceived from an array of whitewashed & stone-clad volumes, each compartment of this residence is connected through various paths, terraces, stone walls, and pergolas, establishing continuity between building and landscape. Showcasing a palatial kitchen, a living and dining room, four ensuite bedrooms, two guesthouses, expansive corridors with narrow windows, a master suite, a terrace swimming pool, and private marble-clad stairways, this house was designed to provide substantial isolation amidst luxury living.

Complete with wooden pergola and rock wall structures which shelter the outdoor dining areas from harsh winds and excessive sunlight, each additional volume of this house is positioned vertical to the main building, creating a boundary which protects its inhabitants from the north wind whilst defining a big yard at the core of the villa.

Sylwester Mateusiak Admits He Struggled To Complete The BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

Despite its rustic and heavily worn out aesthetic, the BMW R80 ESG 649 is incredibly new. Regarded a unique piece amongst the most unique builds, this machine is anything but a mere café racer. Conceptualized and constructed in one of Poland’s many premier custom workshops, the Eastern Spirit Garage is renowned for their quality over quantity philosophy, and their reputation for churning out fewer than a dozen builds over the past seven years.

Sylwester Mateusiak Admits He Struggled To Complete The BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

Showcasing more-than-perfect shape and proportion, the BMW R80 ESG 649 is no conventional R-series custom. With a sleek finish and perfect stance, even its creator, Sylwester Mateusiak admits this project was a struggle. Commissioned by a petrolhead car and bike collector from Warsaw, the BMW R80 ESG 649 showcases modular design, switchable panels, a removable set of fairings, and a spare tail unit for passengers.

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

With innumerable out-of-the-box specifications to consider, Sylwester Mateusiak took it upon himself to create something rarely-seen-before. Opting for a sporty instead of chunky, stocky, and upright, the BMW R80 ESG 649 instead features a long, low tank that completely eschews the design cues of the late 70s original. Through utilizing traditional coachbuilding and metalworking skills, this machine’s entire bodywork down to its tank and fairing, was hand-wheeled from sheets of aluminum.

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

Knowing good and well that complexity ≠ efficiency, the BMW R80 ESG 649’s fairings are easy to navigate. Mounted independently, these fairings are removable without any fancy tools, whilst the all-new cockpit and pimped-out handlebars showcase new grips, switchgear controls, and discreet LED blinkers. Incorporating a tank which not only holds fuel, but encompasses a concealed cargo space underneath, the BMW R80 ESG 649 runs on a Lithium-ion battery, masked by a brake master cylinder.

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

Retaining much of its distinct BMW flair, the R80 ESG 649 features a 797cc boxer motor, overhauled with fresh gaskets, new bearings, and a custom-made starter cover. Ditching the stock Bing carbs and fitted aftermarket Mikunis for better breathing, Sylwester Mateusiak crafts a complete custom exhaust with the right-hand pipe snaking under the swingarm to join its twin.

BMW R80 ESG 649

BMW R80 ESG 649

Amidst the innumerable rearsets and linkages, the BMW R80 ESG 649’s most notable mechanical upgrade comes in the form of a set of Suzuki GSX-R1000 forks. Adapted from a 2002 Gixxer, with internals adjusted to account for the slightly higher weight of the R80, Sylwester Mateusiak is careful to retain the fork’s bottom clamp whilst machining a new top. With front brake calipers taken from the GSX-R and mounted to discs from a 2009 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade, the BMW R80 ESG 649 presents an interesting blend of iconic components, modified to fit perfectly into one solid unit.

Finished in a deep gold paint, with plush suede seating and a classic humped café racer tail unit, the BMW R80 ESG 649 represents a new generation of café racers who are increasingly adventurous and thrill-seeking.
