Marcus Avecilla, Subic Sailing Club’s Managing Director and Head Instructor, is the Europa Sailing School’s Chief Instructor. Europa Yachts, a dealer for multiple European yacht brands, has provided the school with Beneteau First 14 dinghies, which can be sailed single or double-handed.

“We believe having quality hardware can help improve the quality of sailing education,” said Richard Sarinas, Europa’s Director of Marketing and Business Development.

The Europa Sailing School is offering four courses: a three-hour Intro Sail Course, two-day Start Sailing Course, four-day Competent Crew Course and six-day Day Skipper Course.

“We’re thrilled to accommodate enrollees from around the region,” Sarinas said. “Clark International Airport is an hour away from Subic and has regular flights to and from Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Jinjiang, Tokyo and Osaka.”

The Europa Sailing School was largely the brainchild of the Subic Sailing Club’s leaders. Founded in 2004, the club was originally composed
of sports enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and expats connected by sailing. Today, the club has become a non-profit organisation that continues to promote the Philippines as a premier sailing destination.

“Since its inception, the Subic Sailing Club has done much work in promoting sailing as a sport that anybody can participate in,” Sarinas said. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work together to make this dream happen.”

Leopard 51 PC For Philippines, Moorings Expands Charter Options

Leopard Catamarans has sent one of the last Leopard 51 Powercats in production to the Philippines, where it’s being delivered to a “very excited new owner”, according to Kit Chotithamaporn, Leopard’s Yacht Sales Manager for Asia. The 51 PC was sold through Rayomarine, the catamaran brand’s exclusive dealer in the Philippines.

The Philippines is home to one of the last Leopard 51 powercats

Leopard describes the 51 PC as ‘the most successful powercat of all time’, with over 135 hulls built and sold including 12 to Asia, proving one of the region’s most popular twin-hulled motor yachts. Features include an outstanding flybridge, forward saloon door, attractive forward cockpit seating area and a top speed of 24 knots, plus a range over 1,000nm with 1,500-litre fuel tanks.

The 51 PC is being succeeded by the new 53 Powercat. The first hull hit the water in Cape Town last November, while the Asia premiere of the 53 PC will be held at the Singapore Yacht Show from March 19-22.

In Thailand, a Chinese owner has taken over a new Leopard 43 Powercat in Phuket. The 43 followed on from the 51, with large outdoor living spaces including a big flybridge and access to the foredeck via a forward saloon door. The 43 PC has also proven popular in Asia, with nine hulls delivered across the region.

“Year on year, the sales of Leopard Catamarans in Asia have continued to grow and 2019 was no exception,” Chotithamaporn says. “Seeing the sales performance of Leopard powercats in Asia over the last few months provides confidence to know that the powercat market continues to gain momentum in Asia. But more than that, the catamaran industry as whole is proving to be successful and growing year after year.”

Based in Phuket, Leopard’s head office for Asia oversees a dealer network that includes India, Malaysia, Pattaya (Thailand), Indonesia, Philippines, China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Meanwhile, The Moorings, which has a Thailand operation based in Phuket, has expanded its global operations to a new partner base in Paraty, Brazil, where a fleet of three and four-cabin monohulls have been available for charter from January.
Surrounded by towering jungles, this cruising region features bays peppered with islands and world-famous beaches, with Paraty adding to The Moorings’ 20-plus charter destinations worldwide.

Parent company Travelopia has been investing heavily in The Moorings charter operations in 2019 and 2020, including in the fleet, marina infrastructure and IT. New yachts include the four-cabin Moorings 534PC – the same model as the Leopard 53 Powercat – that will charter in the British Virgin Islands from May and the Bahamas in the autumn.

“We are excited to usher in this new era of Moorings powercats,” said Josie Tucci, VP of Sales and Marketing. “The new yachts combine the many advantages of catamaran design – like space and manoeuvrability – with stunning, modern interiors that appeal to today’s charter guest.”

The Moorings exhibited at the first Thailand Charter Week last November, showcasing a Moorings 4800 sailing cat.

South Africa’s Robertson and Caine has built catamarans for The Moorings charter company since 1994 and since 2000 has simultaneously developed the same models, with an extensive option list, under the Leopard brand for private ownership. Robertson & Caine exclusively builds these yachts for THL Marine, the umbrella that both brands operate under.

Famed Ford vs. Ferrari 330 P4 immortalised in white by INK Studio

White, blanc, creme (a kind of off white), the appeal of the milky hue has been a source of cultural and aesthetic debate through the ages. Achromatic and hence, technically not a colour but a shade, Egyptian and Anglo-saxon societies considered white a symbol of purity and nobility but Asian cultures tend to associate it with mourning; however what is undeniable is the psychological appeal of aesthetic – it’s the most common colour in national flags, a palette associated with reincarnation, life and eternal values and now INK Studio’s latest work – the Plain Bodies series Ferrari 330 P4.

“Stripped of its traditional red coachwork paint, these CGI images celebrate functional form and uncomplicated art direction. We present the Ferrari 330 P4 as an object of beauty, its curves forever victorious.” – INK studio

Presenting The Beautiful Loser, the Famed Ferrari 330 P4 immortalised in white by INK Studio

The advent of neoclassical architecture, thanks in part to Greek and Roman white marble structures, made white the most common colour for 20th century buildings of religious or civil authority – with new churches, and government buildings typically rendered in white and as such – the colour has become associated modernity and simplicity, especially with 21st century minimalist trends.

London-based INK studio, best known for their viral concept work on supercars like the 2017 Aston Martin Valkyrie, the three million pound hypercar was created in collaboration with Red Bull Racing and debuting the new design language for Land Rover at the New York International Auto Show heralding the Discovery’s “New Age”; the  English creative studio has put their vision and deft aesthetic instincts into a classic supercar of a glorious era – the Ferrari 330 P4, the antagonist (or protagonist, depending on which team you are on) of the new Ford vs. Ferrari movie.

Transforming the historic supercar into a modern tribute to minimalist and Dieter Rams (unobtrusive approach to design) aesthetics, the classic Ferrari 330 P4 has been transformed into a contemporary icon, stripped down to its essence of light, tone and engineering. The effect is akin to black and white photography and an exercise of dynamic composition.

Dubbed the “Beautiful Loser”, the re-imagined Ferrari 330 P4 might have famously lost to arch-rival Ford after famously winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the famed 1967 Daytona race but that same year, it was suffered a defeat at the hands of the Ford FT40 at Le Mans – nevertheless, it lost it in gorgeous style.

Considered by car aficionados to be the most beautiful car ever made, only three specimens of the Ferrari 330 P4 were ever produced. Forever immortalised by INK, the white Ferrari 330 P4 is minimalism at its most beautiful.

The Revered Norwegian “Grand Old Lady” of Bergen Finally Reopens

The Norwegian “Grand Old Lady” of southwestern coastal city Bergen, was recently restored to her former glory. With a legacy dating as far back as 1928, the Grand Hotel Terminus is De Bergenske Group’s fourth local hotel chain revered for its subtle and classical interior design.

The Revered Norwegian “Grand Old Lady” of Bergen Finally Reopens

Spanning over a period of 13 years, De Bergenske Group had focused its refurbishment efforts on the interior, leaving the exterior predominantly untouched as an ode to the hotel’s historical significance.

With an all-new reception, internal windows guide visitors toward the bar named after famous Norwegian explorer, Amundsen, who spent his last evening in the Grand Hotel Terminus before vanishing on an arctic rescue mission in 1982. The whiskey-themed bar offers a curated array of colorful concoctions, and is accentuated by wood wall paneling and historical imagery.

Housed on the opposing end of the lobby, is the dignified Grand Hotel Terminus’ breakfast room. Incorporating black-and-white checkered flooring with wide angled mirrors, plus opaline and red chandeliers, the room showcases an effortless blend of history, tradition, luxury and modernity, from a riveting contemporary perspective.

Aligning the hotel’s façade with chalky-green walls, guests are ushered into rooms of natural tones, with furniture carefully selected to represent a multitude of design eras – including cabinetmaker, Christopher Knag’s original chairs from 1928, an eclectic assemblage of modernist paintings and monochrome bathrooms for an added touch of graphic contrast.

Hosting an exhibition from 3rd to 9th February 2020 on the architecture and design of Grand Hotel Terminus, amongst other hotels by Claesson Koivisto Rune architects between 2017 and 2019 – the Norwegian Embassy will feature a diverse selection of custom designed furniture and artifacts, by an array of international designers, as part of the nation’s annual Stockholm Design Week.

The Palatial River House of Pererenan, Bali by Alexis Dornier

Located in along the coasts of Pererenan, Bali, the River House by Alexis Dornier is a cubistic five-bedroom residential home which serves as an enhancement and continuation of the area’s already beautiful landscape.

The Palatial River House of Pererenan, Bali by Alexis Dornier

Embedding the island’s existing topography in a over-arching three-dimensional experience, the structure was predominantly constructed out of reclaimed timber and locally sourced sandstone – paying tribute to the island’s vernacular building culture whilst creating a sense of timelessness.

Featuring a multitude of passages, walkways and private spaces, the River House is split with intimate spaces clad in wooden lattice, hovering above the communal living rooms, expansive swimming pool and vast garden.

Reflecting a character of retreat and recreation, each bedroom is meticulously furnished with a natural stone finish and astronomically sized windows. With views of dazzling views of the sunset and surrounding nature, the house is bordered by coconut, banana and bodhi trees, lush rice fields and rolling hills.

Smart Buyer – Tips and Advice When Buying Vacation Homes

Shopping for vacation homes? Take heed in some sound advice before you part cash. Our property expert sheds light on this matter…

 Anantara Layan Residences

Anantara Layan Residences

Think about beachfront villas, ski chalets and mountain lodges. Vacation homes are a place of residence other than the owner’s primary residence that is used for recreational purposes. Often during summers and holiday seasons, these homes have the highest occupancy. Due to the short-term usage, many owners place their homes under rental management to benefit on their investment all year round.

Vacation homes are often chosen for their recreational and leisure activities, however when buying a vacation home, the following factors make a key decision:

  1. Location – back in the ’80s and ’90s majority of the homeowners purchase properties within acceptable proximity to their primary residences. Either by driving distance or short domestic flight. With globalisation comes migration, and in today’s vacation home environment investors cross continents to acquire their dream homes, East meets West in most cases. Location is the most important aspect when purchasing a vacation home from a commercial and residential point of view: does the location offer convenient connectivity? Is there sufficient infrastructure? What is the commuting time to the nearest airport? Which recreational activities are available? And…what can we expect in the future?

1. With a one-of-a-kind interior – Celadon Villa is perfect for a family retreat. Surrounded by islands, the outdoor infinity pool is wrapped around the living area, giving the sunken sitting area a cosy atmosphere. Spacious in a contemporary design Celadon gives an enchanted feeling due to its spectacular views over the horizon.

2. The season – Vacation homes in Niseko, Japan will attract visitors in a different calendar period than vacation homes in Rhode Island, New York. When purchasing a vacation home consider which seasons will accommodate and match with your preference. You may say that vacation homes are directly linked with the weather conditions and climate – investors that live in colder climates will prefer a vacation home that offers them a warm welcome. The opposite is for investors who live in tropical or hot climates, they often seek for some contrast and cooler temperatures.

3. Nature and scenery – whether you look for oceanfront, mountains or beaches, everybody is looking for that “vacation” sentiment. This is a very subjective aspect of vacation homes and often the underlying trigger to your location preference. A retreat where your inner self feels most comfortable.

4. Rentability – Due to online connectivity, vacation homes gained global popularity offering accessibility to millions of travellers annually. When purchasing a vacation home for the investment it’s important to draw a competitive landscape: Which homes are in my vicinity, and what kind of rental and hospitality services do they offer? Is there a demand or potential in this location? Which seasons will provide me with the highest occupancy and how can I accommodate those travellers? The good part about rentability is, that demand and reputation can increase your rental return.

5. Rental management – As a vacation homeowner you will not be able to manage your property on a weekly or even monthly basis, therefore it’s important that you are associated with a reputable rental management company “slash” hospitality operator. Managing rentals only is not sufficient, providing upper hospitality is the key to success. In many markets, boutique operators have created niche market positioning that will benefit your investment. This means that you do not always have to sign up with the largest operator, by rather with the best operator. Keep in mind that the rental management company becomes your business card – and will be the first line of contact of communication between the client and your home, maintain frequent communication between you and the operator and learn.
